Taekwon-do is a name given to a modern form of an ancient Korean Martial Art of self defence or unarmed combat. Taekwon-do is practiced world wide and is now a recognised Olympic Sport. Taekwon-do has been an integral part of Korean culture for over 2000 years, originating from an earlier form of foot fighting called Tae Kyon. Through the centuries hand techniques were introduced and this combination of 'hand' and 'foot' is now called Taekwon-do.
In more advanced techniques, use of the legs is still more prevalent. The legs are much more powerful than the hands, can reach further, and this makes Taekwon-do more spectacular than other forms of self defence arts. The true goal of Taekwon-do is not to be seen as a brutal method of killing or form of wizardry that makes one invincible, it is an artistic expression of just what the human body is capable of, if disciplined.
'Tae' means kicking, jumping, stepping or flying of the feet. 'kwon' means punching striking or beating of the hands or fist, and 'do' means art, technique or way. Combined 'Taekwon-do' means the art of foot and hand fighting.
In theory anyone can learn Taekwon-do regardless of sex or age. Physical fitness is not a pre-requisite for Taekwon-do, as it is achieved through practicing the art. However for health and safety reasons, we only accept children over the age of seven, as children younger than this, are often not developed enough to cope with the rigours of training.
Is there any danger in learning Taekwon-do ?
All classes are closely supervised by the Instructor. The risk of injury is greatly reduced through an extensive warm-up session and by the use of protective equipment. Furthermore, all students are required to have a full licence and insurance if they wish to practice this Art.
What are the benefits to learning Taekwon-do ?
Taekwon-do for Young Adults and Children
Taekwon-do teaching methods, develop a strong, healthy and agile body, as well as good personality traits. The spirit and atmosphere in which it is taught and practiced involves the pursuit of excellence and students are taught, at an early age, the importance of keeping their bodies healthy and active.
Women's Self-defence
Many women do initially learn Taekwon-do as a method of self-defence. Those who have ventured to undertake the art, quickly recognize that Taekwon-do is a way of life, and that the initial boost in confidence and improvement in physical ability can be maintained and challenged either in the Dojang through diligent practice or in the ring, through competition.

How are the sessions structured ?
All newcomers are entitled to a free trial lesson. Once you are a member of the Slough Taekwon-do Club, you are able to take part in intermediate and advanced lessons and attend Gradings, Competitions and Seminars.
Sessions are two hours long which are broken down into an intensive warm-up, main class and warm-down. Each session deals with a particular aspect of Taekwon-do, which can be broken down into the following:
Classical | Blocking, striking and kicking techniques in a series of stances are taught in a Syllabus form in preparation for Gradings. |
Sports | Cardiovascular exercises, agility training, sparring techniques etc are worked upon. |
Competition | These sessions are for intermediate and advanced students who wish to participate in Regional, National and International Competitions. |
Gradings
Gradings are held quarterly and open to all Members, provided they have attended a minimum of 30 lessons since the last Grading. All Grading are in adherence to the BTCB guidelines and are conducted by a BTCB Examiner.
Competitions
We encourage all students who show talent to participate in Regional and National Competitions, where a number of our students have been successful in the past. Members participate in major events throughout the year to increase their experience and develop their skills.
